A flashing blue light needs a model-specific explanation

A flashing blue light on a Worcester boiler is an indication to identify, not a diagnosis of a failed component. On the Greenstar Ri Compact models covered here, the blue indicator can communicate operating status or a fault. Other Worcester generations use different combinations of lights, reset indicators and displayed codes. A generic answer such as “it always means low pressure” or “it is always EA” is not a sound basis for choosing a repair.

Start by recording the complete model name, the behaviour of the light and which services have stopped working. If a display also shows letters or numbers, preserve the complete sequence. The colour alone loses information that may matter to the attending engineer. If there is a readable EA227, EA229 or E9 indication, use the relevant model-qualified code guide as well.

Keep the boiler casing closed. A gas smell, suspected carbon monoxide or water around electrics changes the priority from reading the light to protecting the occupants. For a gas smell, leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from well away from it; avoid operating electrical switches inside. Do not keep trying to start an appliance that has an unresolved safety concern.

Identify the boiler generation before comparing flash patterns

The name Greenstar covers more than one boiler design. Even Ri and Ri Compact are not sufficient reasons to assume that an online flash chart belongs to your appliance. Read the accessible label or installation paperwork and include the capacity and any ErP suffix. Do not remove a cover to find a number; ask for help if the identification is not safely accessible.

This guide has checked the May 2013 user instructions for 27Ri and 30Ri Compact, the July 2015 installer document for 27Ri and 30Ri Compact ErP, and a legacy manufacturer manual for Greenstar 12i and 24i System. Those documents establish why the interpretation must remain tied to a model. They do not establish a universal Worcester chart, and they do not cover every later gas boiler or oil-fired Heatslave appliance.

When arranging help, a photograph of the accessible model label and the front controls is more useful than describing the boiler as “the Worcester with the blue circle”. Keep any serial number in your private booking correspondence rather than posting it publicly. If a replacement controller or other significant repair is recorded in the paperwork, mention that too. The engineer needs to identify the equipment actually fitted, not merely the original sales name.

Steady, dark, flickering and repeating flashes are different observations

Describe what you see without first naming a cause. A light that stays steadily on is different from one that repeats an obvious on-off pattern. A light that looks faint or flickers irregularly is different again. If it stays dark, add whether the appliance still responds to a normal heating or hot-water request. That additional fact changes the question a professional needs to answer.

In the checked Ri Compact ErP fault table, an unlit blue indicator can accompany no demand; it is not, by itself, proof that the appliance has lost its electrical supply. Conversely, the fact that radiators feel warm does not prove that the boiler is presently firing. They may retain heat from earlier operation. Record both the light and the timing of the heating request instead of using warmth as a substitute for the indicator.

An August 2012 DIYnot owner described a Ri that still appeared to work while its blue light was initially absent and later flickering. Replies proposed a circuit-board explanation, but the thread does not establish a tested repair outcome. The useful lesson is to report the abnormal indicator accurately and arrange assessment. It is not evidence that a new board is the correct purchase for another home.

Record one complete repeating sequence, not just a flash count

If you can stand safely in front of the appliance, take a short video that includes the whole front panel and at least one complete repeating cycle. Begin before the pause if possible and keep filming until the same point returns. Include any reset light and digital display in the frame. Do not press controls while recording merely to create a more dramatic result.

The checked 2015 Ri Compact ErP document distinguishes groups using the position of a fast burst relative to a slower count, separated by a pause. The older 12i/24i System document instead includes distinctions such as a slow light that is mostly off versus one that is mostly on, with separate reset-light information. These examples explain why saying “two flashes” can leave out the part that identifies the relevant instruction.

You do not need to decode an installer table yourself. A useful booking description might be “the blue light repeats a pause and several flashes; the reset light is also flashing; I have a video”. If the sequence changes, preserve the second recording and note when it happened. Do not replace the first observation with the later one: the change may be useful context, even though it does not prove that two components have failed.

Does the problem appear on heating demand, hot-water demand or both?

Report which normal request precedes the flashing. For a combi, hot-water demand and central-heating demand are different operating situations. For a boiler connected to a cylinder, the tap draws stored water while separate controls request heat for the store. A cylinder system therefore needs its own description; opening a hot tap is not equivalent to commanding the boiler to heat it immediately.

In a public DIYUK account archived in February 2026, an owner described a Worcester connected to a Stelflow cylinder. Heating reportedly worked, but a hot-water request was followed by ignition attempts and blue flashing. The model and eventual repair were not established. That account raises a useful investigation question about the conditions in which the symptom appears; it does not establish a faulty cylinder thermostat, valve or boiler part.

For your own installation, say whether the cylinder has a separate programmer and whether the issue is a cold tap, a cylinder that does not recharge, or a boiler fault during recharging. Do not bridge thermostats, open wiring centres or force motorised valves to test a theory. If heating works normally but stored hot water does not, provide the cylinder details as well as the boiler model. That helps avoid booking an investigation based on an assumed combi arrangement.

Do not combine a single cold outlet with a boiler-wide fault

A cold shower and a flashing boiler light may occur in the same home without the shower proving the meaning of the light. Record whether other hot outlets deliver normal hot water under their ordinary use. If the kitchen tap is hot while only the shower is cold, include that distinction rather than telling the repairer that the home has no hot water at all. Do not deliberately expose anyone to unexpectedly hot water while checking.

Conversely, if every hot outlet is cold and the cylinder has not reheated, the enquiry should describe a whole hot-water loss as well as the boiler indication. If there is no water flow from a hot outlet, say that explicitly: absent flow and flowing cold water are different observations. A short description of these differences helps choose the first investigation without asking the resident to name a failed part.

Avoid running a long series of tests or changing cylinder and boiler settings together. Preserve the normal arrangement and the symptoms already observed. Tell the engineer which comparison was made, which was not possible and whether the flash pattern appeared at the same time.

After a power interruption, preserve the sequence of events

A power interruption is relevant history, but timing alone does not prove electrical damage. Record whether there was a wider outage, a household circuit tripped, or an appliance was switched off during work. If electrical protection keeps tripping, do not repeatedly restore it to continue testing the boiler. That requires appropriate professional assessment, especially where moisture, burning or damaged equipment is involved.

An Oxford owner posted in April 2013 after a kitchen-circuit interruption, describing an unsuccessful reset and blue flashes on a Greenstar Ri. Later they reported that the light had returned to steady operation before they carried out another poster’s suggested power-off procedure. The cause was not independently verified. It would be inaccurate to turn that exchange into evidence that the suggested procedure fixed the boiler.

Use the same discipline in your own record. Separate actions actually taken from advice you merely received, and distinguish an apparent recovery from a confirmed repair. If the fault disappears while you are waiting for an appointment, tell the booking team what changed. Ask whether the visit should still assess the recurrence or another unresolved symptom. Do not cancel essential safety assessment simply because an indicator has temporarily stopped flashing.

A pressure reading is context, not a universal explanation

Do not add water just because an internet result associates a flashing light with pressure. First establish whether the heating installation is sealed or open vented, and whether the gauge you are reading actually belongs to the heating circuit. A gauge near a cylinder can easily be described imprecisely in a telephone conversation. Photograph its location from a safe distance rather than guessing which circuit it measures.

The checked Ri Compact user document covers both open-vented and sealed heating systems. That alone prevents a universal instruction to find a filling loop on every installation. Where a sealed system has an accessible gauge, record its reading and whether the system is cold or has recently operated. Compare it with the actual user instructions and any guidance provided for your installation, rather than importing a target from a different model.

If pressure has repeatedly fallen, or filling was attempted but the indication did not change, include that history in the enquiry. Further investigation may be needed even if a later reading looks satisfactory. Equally, a normal-looking gauge does not prove that all circulation, sensing or ignition conditions are correct. Avoid combining multiple home interventions to chase the light: the result becomes harder to interpret and may introduce a second problem.

Use only the matching user reset instructions, then stop if the fault persists

A reset requests another operating attempt; it does not repair the cause of a recurring fault. Read the user instructions belonging to the identified appliance before considering one. Do not copy a button combination or knob position from a boiler with a similar-looking front panel. If you cannot confidently match the controls to the document, arrange help instead of experimenting.

The checked Ri Compact user instructions distinguish the documented reset from simply interrupting electrical power and direct the user to obtain assistance if the fault remains. This guide does not prescribe a repeated reset cycle. If an authorised user reset has already failed, report that clearly. If it appears to work but the flashing returns during the next normal demand, treat the recurrence as unfinished investigation rather than a reason to keep repeating the same action.

Do not enter service modes, alter internal settings or remove panels to clear an indicator. Some installer documents include operations intended for commissioning and diagnosis, not everyday household use. A control sequence found in such a document is not automatically a safe homeowner instruction. Keep a short record of the last normal operation and the attempted user action so that the attending engineer can start with the actual state of the system.

Ask what finding supports a proposed repair

When a repair is proposed, ask the engineer to connect the recommendation to the identified model, observed indication and assessment. “The lamp flashes, therefore it needs a board” skips the evidence needed to distinguish a control problem from another condition. A flash sequence can direct testing without establishing which item must be replaced.

Useful questions include whether the original symptom was reproduced, what remains uncertain and how the result will be checked after work. These questions do not require you to supervise internal electrical or gas tests. They help you understand the scope being authorised. If the fault appears only after a particular demand ends or after several hours, mention that before the visit so that an immediate startup demonstration is not mistaken for a complete recreation of the problem.

Separate an investigative appointment from a guaranteed repair. Parts availability, access and the cause actually found can affect the next step. Prepare a concise handover and check what has actually been restored

Before the appointment, gather the model details, video, time of the first occurrence and any previous engineer’s findings. Explain whether the home currently has heating, stored hot water, both or neither. Include access restrictions and whether a landlord, managing agent or warranty provider needs to authorise work. You do not need to collect technical measurements behind the casing to make the visit useful.

At handover, ask what was found and what changed. If the agreed job was a repair, ask how operation was checked under the demand that previously triggered the symptom. If the outcome is temporary recovery or an unresolved intermittent issue, keep that distinction in the written record. A steady light for a few minutes may be reassuring, but it is not a promise that the original pattern cannot return.

Keep the evidence from before and after the visit together. Should the light flash again, report whether the same sequence and operating conditions returned or whether this is a different indication.
