F28 means the boiler has not established ignition
On the Vaillant ecoTEC models referenced here, F28 or F.28 means the starting sequence has failed to establish ignition. It is not a component diagnosis. Fuel supply, ignition and flame detection are different parts of that process, so the same displayed fault can require different repairs in different homes.

Why startup failure is different from a thermostat problem
A thermostat tells the heating system that heat is wanted. F28 reports that the boiler has encountered a problem further along the route to producing it. Turning a thermostat up again does not repair an unsuccessful ignition sequence, even though both situations can leave the radiators cold.
This distinction helps when several controls appear on the wall. A programmer being off can explain a lack of heating demand; it does not explain away a fault already displayed by the boiler. Record the actual screen rather than treating every cold radiator as evidence that the schedule must be wrong.
The starting sequence also differs from a flame that has already been established and then disappears. The older ecoTEC fault table distinguishes F28 from F29 on that basis. A household does not need to watch a burner to identify the distinction: report the displayed code and any sequence of codes already observed through the normal controls.
Do not remove a viewing cover, run a service programme or try to create a flame to see which stage fails. That investigation belongs with the engineer. The practical value of understanding the sequence is knowing why the fault cannot be narrowed to a room thermostat, a pump or a gas valve simply because one of those names appears in an online discussion.

Separate a known gas-supply interruption from a boiler fault
A known interruption is relevant information. There may have been a supply notice, recent meter work or a problem shown by a prepayment account. Check existing messages and the normal meter or account information only where it is safe and familiar. Tell the engineer or supplier what is known rather than assuming that the boiler itself has failed.
Do not turn unknown gas valves or light another appliance solely to test the supply. Another appliance appearing to work is not a measurement of the conditions at the boiler during startup. It therefore cannot rule out every supply-related issue that a professional might need to test.
Similarly, seeing credit on an account answers an account question, not every question about gas reaching the appliance. If a supplier has advised that the supply is interrupted or unsafe, follow that instruction rather than trying to restart the boiler ahead of clearance. A fault guide cannot override a specific instruction about your installation.
This distinction can prevent the wrong appointment being arranged. A confirmed wider supply problem may require the supplier's response; a boiler that still fails after that issue is resolved may need appliance investigation. That is why a fault about unsuccessful ignition should not automatically be translated into either no gas or a broken spark component by someone looking only at the display.
A replacement recommendation should make the connection between evidence and part clear. Ask what finding distinguishes the proposed cause from the alternatives. For example, an observation about supply conditions answers a different question from an observation about whether the flame is being reliably recognised. The household does not need the raw test procedure to understand that distinction.
Avoid buying a valve, electrode or control board from the code alone. Aside from the need for competent installation, versions and part compatibility matter. An inexpensive speculative part can become an expensive delay when it is not the relevant cause or does not match the appliance. A clear diagnosis is more valuable than a shopping list copied from somebody else's F28 repair.

Cold weather makes drainage relevant, not certain
When F28 appears during a cold spell, it is understandable to suspect a frozen condensate route. Weather is a useful clue, but the date on the calendar does not establish the condition of a drain. An indoor route and an exposed outdoor section have different contexts, and the visible section may not show the complete path.
A DIYUK homeowner described an F28 fault during cold weather that initially cleared, then returned. After an attempted drainage intervention, the owner reported loud banging and stopped the boiler. There was no confirmed repair outcome in the discussion. The account supports caution about escalating an uncertain problem through improvised drain work, not a conclusion that every winter F28 is condensate-related.
Look only at what is safely visible from ground level and describe it. Do not detach a hose, remove a trap, probe an outlet or pour liquid into an unidentified pipe. A boiler drain is not simply a household waste connection that can be dismantled without considering the appliance.
If the matching manufacturer guidance provides a specific homeowner response to a confirmed frozen external condensate pipe, use that complete guidance and its limits. Where the route, pipe identity or condition is uncertain, obtain help. This page does not offer a universal thawing procedure because an F28 code alone has not established either a freeze or a safe access arrangement.

A normal pressure reading does not settle F28
Heating-water pressure and ignition are different observations. If the gauge appears within the range specified for the installed system, it still does not prove that fuel delivery or flame recognition is satisfactory. Conversely, a low reading may need attention without explaining every aspect of the fault sequence.
Do not add water just because a search for boiler faults has led to a topping-up video. Read the actual code. F22 and F75 have separate meanings in the relevant Vaillant manuals, and advice written for one should not be imported into an F28 investigation without checking the model and situation.
If several codes appeared in succession, preserve that sequence as accurately as possible. There is a difference between remembering that a pressure warning happened last month and seeing it alternate with the current ignition fault. An engineer can assess whether the observations are connected; the household should not assume a single cause merely because all the messages came from one appliance.
The useful response to uncertainty is to stop changing unrelated settings. Repeated topping-up, thermostat adjustments and resets can leave the system in a different condition from the one that first produced the fault. One clear description of what happened is more useful than several experimental interventions whose effects cannot be separated.
When one normal reset is a reasonable limit

For household troubleshooting, one permitted normal attempt is enough to distinguish a transient clearable event from a code that remains or immediately returns.
That attempt is only appropriate when there is no sign of an unsafe appliance, no contrary engineer instruction and no known unresolved supply problem. Do not treat a reset button as a general safety test. A boiler accepting the command does not certify its gas supply, flue, drainage or internal condition.
If the boiler resumes operation, the important question is whether it stays in ordinary service. An F28 message that returns at the next demand is different from a one-off event after a confirmed external interruption. The recurrence should be investigated even if another reset temporarily restores heat.
If you have already made several attempts, tell the engineer and stop repeating them. There is no need to recreate the failure for a video. Nor should the appliance be repeatedly switched off at its electrical supply to bypass the normal user interface. Noises and partial restarts need their own description
A household often notices a sequence: a click, a period of activity, silence, another attempt and then the fault. That sequence can help an engineer understand when the failure occurs. If unusual banging or another safety concern occurs, stop operating the appliance and seek assessment. If the appliance is quiet now, an existing account of what happened is still useful. You do not need to reproduce an alarming event during the booking call. For warranty or existing cover, check the actual provider arrangements before commissioning overlapping work. Do not assume a particular component, supply issue or external control is included. The relevant question is the scope attached to your appliance and agreement, rather than the experience or price reported by another household with a different contract.
What should be checked before calling the repair complete?
The immediate result should be more specific than the display being clear. Ask whether the boiler completed the relevant startup checks and whether the service that originally failed was demonstrated.
