The Ideal Logic Code Combi ESP1 October 2023 user guide identifies F2 as flame loss. The Logic System2 S15–S30 October 2023 guide uses F02 for flame loss. Confirm your exact appliance and full display before applying either description. A recurring flame-loss report needs assessment; it does not identify one failed component, and repeated resets are not a repair.

The distinction from nearby search results matters. Ideal L2 is an ignition-lockout code in the cited ESP1 guide, while F1 concerns low water pressure. Viessmann uses F2 differently on the particular Vitodens model covered in our separate guide. Fault codes are not a universal language shared by manufacturers. Adding water because another brand's F2 article discussed pressure can send you in the wrong direction.

Find the full Ideal model in accessible paperwork or on an external label without removing the casing. Include suffixes and any additional characters shown on the display. The date on a manual identifies its edition, not when your boiler was installed. If you cannot confidently match the appliance to the guide, send a photograph to the installer or manufacturer support team and ask which instructions apply.

What flame loss tells the engineer—and what it cannot tell you

Flame loss is an operating condition reported by the controls. It does not tell a homeowner whether an interruption in supply, an appliance component or another installation condition explains the event. The useful first question is what happened before the code appeared. The wrong shortcut is to turn the wording into an immediate order for an electrode, gas valve or control board.

A boiler that appears to begin operating and then stops presents a different description from one that never appears to start. Report what you observed from normal use, without opening the appliance to check a spark or flame. A changing operating symbol, the timing of the code or an unfamiliar sound can be described without claiming that a particular part has passed a test.

Do not remove a cover, disturb wiring, loosen gas fittings or clean internal components. Those are not necessary steps for understanding the user-visible warning. Even where another owner reports that cleaning or replacing something solved their F2, the appropriate response is to preserve that as an account of their repair, not a procedure to repeat on your boiler.

When an engineer proposes work, ask what finding supports it and how the result will be checked. You do not need to interpret specialist measurements yourself. A clear explanation should connect the observed condition with the recommendation, including any uncertainty. This is particularly important for an intermittent fault, where the appliance may not reproduce the symptom during a short visit. The lack of a visible code at that moment does not prove the history was mistaken, but the history alone does not prove which component should be replaced.

Newly installed, still heating, but showing F2: avoid false reassurance

One public DIYUK owner described intermittent F2 on a newly fitted Ideal while heating and hot water remained available. They were worried about staying in the property while waiting for a cover-provider appointment. The account did not establish a diagnosis or a final outcome. It highlights a question that a simple reset guide does not answer: how should someone act when the appliance sometimes works but they are unsure about safety?

A remote description cannot certify the boiler or installation as safe. Equally, the code alone does not establish that an explosion is imminent. Use the emergency boundary for gas smell or suspected carbon monoxide, and report the actual fault promptly to the installer, manufacturer or appropriate engineer. Tell them it is recurring and ask for explicit advice about the appliance while awaiting attendance rather than assuming the original appointment date remains appropriate.

Recent installation is relevant history, not proof that the problem is harmless or that the installer caused it. Keep the commissioning documents, warranty information and the date the first fault appeared. If the system worked normally for a period before F2 began, include that interval. If it appeared from the first use, say so. Those are materially different sequences for the person investigating.

Ask who owns the next step when more than one business is involved. An installer, manufacturer and cover provider may each need different information or authorisation. Avoid arranging overlapping visits without understanding the scope and terms. The immediate objective is a clear safety and attendance plan based on the actual symptoms, followed by an investigation—not blanket reassurance based on the age of the appliance or the fact that one shower was still warm.

A noisy morning fault that did not happen during the service

In a July 2022 DIYnot thread, a UK Ideal Logic owner reported noises and F2 around the morning hot-water cycle, despite a recent service during which the symptom did not occur. They later reported a positive manufacturer visit and an injector-related finding. This remains an unverified owner account. It does not establish that another noisy Ideal has the same defect or that a previous service was necessarily inadequate.

The useful lesson is to preserve the circumstances of an intermittent event. State what ordinary demand was active, whether the appliance had been idle overnight, and how soon the noise or code appeared. If a video can be taken safely from outside the appliance while the event is already occurring, it may help communicate the sequence. Do not keep operating a faulty boiler merely to obtain a better recording.

A recording is evidence of the sound and display, not a remote diagnosis. Different faults can be described by householders with the same words, such as rattling, humming or gurgling. Avoid assigning a part name from the sound. Explain whether hot water remained available, whether a cylinder is present and whether the display later changed without a confirmed repair.

When contacting the business that serviced the appliance, separate the maintenance record from the current complaint. Ask whether the next attendance is an investigation of the recurring fault and provide the saved sequence. A service date alone does not establish the condition during a later event. If another engineer attends, supply the record of what was actually inspected or done so that useful evidence is carried forward rather than lost in a general statement that the boiler was recently checked.

Supply information is useful; gas testing is not a homeowner task

A known supply interruption, meter problem or recent supplier visit should be included in an F2 report. Note whether it preceded the first event and whether the boiler still reports the fault after the supplier says the issue is resolved. Do not assume that a supply event explains every later recurrence, or that a continued code proves the appliance has been damaged.

If another gas appliance was already working during ordinary use, mention it as context. That observation does not establish that the boiler's own operating conditions are satisfactory. Do not light appliances experimentally when safety is in doubt, and do not alter meter fittings, regulators or gas pipework. Contact the supplier about account or meter messages through its normal support route.

Where the boiler uses LPG, state that before booking. The fuel and supply arrangement affect the competence and investigation required. Advice about a mains-gas meter cannot automatically be transferred to cylinders or bulk storage. If you do not know the arrangement, ask the property owner or use the installation documents rather than guessing from an internet photograph.

The same restraint applies to the pressure gauge. You can photograph its reading, but Ideal F2 is not an instruction to top up the heating circuit until the display changes. If another warning or an abnormal gauge reading is also present, report both. Let the correct model guidance and assessment establish their relationship. Trying several unrelated actions at once can leave you unable to say which condition changed, while failing to answer the original flame-loss question.

Cold weather, condensate and an outside pipe you cannot reach

If F2 started during freezing weather, include that timing in the report. Do not turn the association into a confirmed frozen-condensate diagnosis. The exact model's user guidance should determine any permitted check, and the actual drainage route must be identified. A plastic pipe close to a boiler is not enough information on its own to justify thawing, disconnecting or redirecting it.

Photograph an accessible outside route only from a safe position. Note visible ice, the floor level and whether a section passes through a communal or inaccessible area. Do not climb a ladder, lean out of a window or use improvised heat to reach it. If you cannot confidently identify the pipe or follow the manufacturer's safe user guidance, arrange assistance.

Tell the engineer about any action already attempted and its result. An apparently clear visible section does not establish that the whole route is clear, and a fault that remains afterwards does not identify an internal part. The aim is to preserve the information needed for assessment rather than keep escalating the same unsuccessful attempt.

If the fault has also occurred in mild weather, include those episodes. A record containing only the most recent cold morning may bias the enquiry towards one explanation. Conversely, a clear seasonal pattern is relevant and should not be discarded just because the boiler happens to work on a warmer afternoon. A useful history captures both occurrences and exceptions without deliberately recreating adverse conditions or interfering with the flue, drainage or appliance casing.

Hot water availability does not always prove the boiler recovered

Describe heating and hot-water behaviour separately. On a combi, note whether the code occurred during a normal hot-tap demand, a heating demand or both. Do not repeatedly alternate demands to reproduce it. The sequence already observed can be reported without additional operation of a faulty appliance.

Where there is a hot-water cylinder, warm water can remain available after the boiler stops. A separate heat source may also be involved. Tell the engineer about the cylinder and any known supplementary heating, and distinguish water still available at the tap from evidence that the boiler is currently operating normally. If you cannot establish that distinction, say so rather than asserting that the boiler has recovered.

Similarly, radiators retaining warmth after a fault are not evidence that the burner is still operating. Record the display and what happened, not just whether the house still felt warm. This matters particularly when a morning fault is followed by a call later in the day: stored warmth can make the symptom sound less significant even though the underlying question remains.

If only one outlet is cold while others work and no current boiler code is displayed, describe that limitation. A historic F2 event may not explain a separate shower or tap problem. The purpose of gathering this information is to route the investigation accurately. It should prevent every symptom being attributed to the boiler, while also preventing residual hot water or radiator warmth from being mistaken for a verified repair of the flame-loss fault.

F2 remains after parts work: request a reasoned next stage

A public Ideal Heat 15 owner reported continuing F2 after servicing and valve work; a later reply said the problem remained. The installation's location and the repair details were not independently verified. This account does not establish that the reported work was wrong or that a different named part must be the answer. It raises the practical problem of avoiding another speculative repair when earlier actions have not produced a lasting result.

Collect the actual work records. Distinguish a part checked, cleaned, adjusted and replaced, and note whether the explanation was a confirmed finding or a possibility. If the paperwork says only “boiler repair,” ask for clarification. The next engineer should not have to reconstruct several visits from a household memory that everything has been changed.

Ask what the next diagnostic stage is intended to establish and how its result will guide the decision. If a proposal repeats earlier work, ask what new evidence supports it. Where the fault is intermittent, ask how the ordinary-use history will be considered without requiring you to provoke it. These questions focus the visit on an answerable problem rather than a sequence of parts selected because they appear in F2 search results.

If the cause remains uncertain after attendance, request a written summary and agreed follow-up route. A clear provisional conclusion is better than an unsupported promise that the problem has gone. Keep the distinction between temporary restored operation and a demonstrated repair. If replacement of the whole boiler is proposed, ask for the condition or repair limitation supporting it; F2 alone does not establish that replacement is the only reasonable option.

Booking the right visit and agreeing what a repair will establish

For a London enquiry, send the postcode, full Ideal model, exact code and a short history. Include any new installation, recent service, previous parts work, known supply event and unsuccessful user action. Explain access restrictions, particularly external pipework at height. This is enough to start a useful discussion without claiming that a remote conversation can identify the final repair.

Ask whether the appointment is for fault investigation, maintenance or both, how diagnostic work is charged and how additional work will be authorised. Check manufacturer or service-plan terms if you may have cover. The fact that another public owner obtained a manufacturer visit does not establish your entitlement, timescale or cost. Confirm those for your own appliance and agreement.
