What Baxi E133 confirms—and what it leaves unanswered
In the Baxi Duo-tec Combi HE instructions examined for this guide, E133 concerns interrupted gas supply, failed ignition or failure to detect a flame. It is a lockout description, not a verdict that one particular component needs replacing. Record the full model and code, follow only its permitted user checks, and arrange investigation when recovery fails or does not last.
The cited manufacturer document covers the older Duo-tec Combi 24, 28, 33 and 40 HE range and carries a 2007 copyright. Do not assume that its controls, reset procedure or diagnostic detail apply to every subsequent Baxi. A Platinum, Eco or newer Duo-tec needs its own matching instructions. The familiar brand name and a similar case are not enough to identify the right manual.
On an alternating display, capture the complete sequence. E1 followed by 33 is more informative than reporting E1 alone. A short video of the external display can help if the code changes faster than a photograph captures it. Keep a record before a permitted restart, rather than relying on memory after the screen changes.
If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave, avoid switches and flames, and call 0800 111 999 from a safe place. Do not start appliance tests. Without those emergency signs, a persistent E133 still calls for the correct fault process; a boiler that repeatedly locks out should not be kept going through a cycle of restarts simply to obtain another period of heating.

E1 then 33 is one code, not two separate faults
The alternating display can make a complete E133 look like two unrelated messages. On the older Duo-tec HE A documented in the linked 2009 manual, the display shows E1 and then 33. Read the cycle together before choosing a troubleshooting route. A photograph of just its first part does not establish which E1-prefixed code is present.
If you have only seen E1, this ignition guide may not yet be the right match. Watch one complete repeat from a safe position without resetting to force another start. Where the matching older display shows 19 as the second part, use the E119 pressure guide instead. Another suffix needs its own matching manual entry; it should not be treated as either of these faults by default.
Record any action already taken before the full code was understood. For example, a pressure adjustment followed by the same complete E133 is a different history from an E119 that disappeared. Neither is a reason to keep adding water. Preserve any changed code and remaining symptoms so that the next assessment starts with the current problem, rather than the incomplete message that prompted the first action.

Why ignition, flame detection and gas supply are different questions
The boiler must do more than make an ignition attempt. It needs suitable supply and operating conditions, and its controls must confirm that the expected flame has been established. A user-visible E133 does not tell you which part of that sequence failed. That is why a list of possible components is not the same thing as a diagnosis or a shopping list.
Consider two different reports: “the boiler never appeared to start” and “it started, ran briefly and stopped.” They may both be described online as failure to ignite, but they preserve different observations for the engineer. Say what you noticed from normal use without removing the cover to verify a spark or flame. Audible clicks, a changing display or a brief operating indication can be reported without assigning a component name to them.
An engineer may need model-specific tests to distinguish the appliance's supply, ignition and flame-confirmation conditions. These are not checks to perform by loosening fittings, moving electrodes or probing wiring. Even a video showing another person doing so cannot establish that the procedure is appropriate or safe for your installation.
If a component replacement is recommended, ask which finding supports it and what the proposed work is expected to resolve. That is a useful consumer question, especially where the same code has returned after earlier work. It does not require you to challenge specialist measurements with an internet theory. The goal is to connect the proposed repair with evidence, while recognising that an intermittent fault may require a staged investigation rather than a confident answer at the first glance.
The boiler works after a reset, then E133 comes back
Temporary recovery is important information, but it is not proof that the underlying fault has gone. Note how long the boiler ran and what demand was present when it stopped again. “It worked until the next hot-water use” describes a different pattern from “it ran for two days and failed overnight.” Neither should be flattened into “reset fixed it” if the code has already returned.
A June 2015 DIYnot account from a Duo-tec 28 owner described brief recovery after resets and concern about an unresolved fault. A separate public Platinum-owner account described repeated visits and an appliance that could work while someone was attending. These are unverified owner histories, not evidence of the failure rate of Baxi boilers or of any particular part. They do establish why a useful guide must cover intermittent faults rather than stop at the reset instruction.
Use only the restart procedure permitted by the correct user guide. If it fails or recovery is short-lived, report that and arrange assistance. Do not keep cycling power to persuade the boiler to complete a heating period. The fact that an action sometimes changes the display does not make it an appropriate long-term response.
Preserve a short log of ordinary-use events instead of running deliberate repeated tests. Include the date, heating or hot-water demand, approximate time until the fault and any other displayed message. An engineer can use that history alongside inspection findings. It is particularly valuable when the appliance happens to operate normally on arrival, because the discussion can then focus on a documented sequence rather than a vague recollection that it “sometimes gives trouble.”

Cold weather and condensate: a possibility with clear limits
Baxi's current condensate guidance identifies E133 among codes that can occur with a frozen condensate pipe. That makes weather and the external drainage route relevant information; it does not mean every E133 is a frozen pipe. A lockout on a mild day, a persistent fault after a thaw or repeated events in different seasons should not be forced into the same explanation without inspection.
If freezing weather preceded the fault, describe the timing and any visible ice from a safe position. Establish that the pipe is actually the condensate drain before following manufacturer guidance. Colour alone is not reliable identification, and an outside outlet close to the boiler may serve another purpose. Do not cap, disconnect or redirect a pipe in an attempt to make the appliance operate.
The manufacturer's safe user instructions are the limit of any homeowner response. An inaccessible pipe, icy ground, a route above a drop or uncertainty about the pipe's identity is reason to stop and arrange suitable access. Do not climb with hot water, use boiling water or improvise heat near the appliance. Internal condensate components are outside the scope of this guide.
If an allowed check was attempted, tell the engineer exactly what happened. Visible ice disappearing does not prove that the complete route is clear; continued lockout does not prove that an expensive boiler part has failed. Both are observations to assess. Ask whether any confirmed external issue needs a longer-term installation remedy, but do not assume that a one-off visit includes redesigning the route or that such a change will address every cause of E133.
Supply interruptions, meters and another appliance that still works
Report any known interruption to the gas supply, supplier work or prepayment-meter problem around the time E133 began. If the issue is with an account or meter message, contact the supplier through its normal route. Do not alter meter fittings, regulators or gas pipework. In a managed block, obtain authorised access to the relevant equipment rather than operating a shared control yourself.
If another gas appliance was already working normally during ordinary use, mention that as context. It does not establish that the boiler's supply and combustion conditions are satisfactory. Do not light another appliance as a test when there is a gas smell or another safety concern. A homeowner's observation and an engineer's measured supply check answer different questions.
Where a supply interruption has apparently been resolved but E133 remains, report both facts. “The meter problem was corrected at lunchtime, but the boiler still shows E133” helps the engineer avoid assuming that the original interruption is the whole present problem. It also avoids the opposite mistake of ignoring a relevant supply event because the fault is now being treated as an appliance repair.
State clearly if the boiler uses LPG. A guide about a mains-gas installation should not be applied automatically to cylinder or bulk-tank arrangements, and the person attending needs the appropriate competence for the actual fuel and appliance. Do not copy purging or regulator advice from a forum. The useful action is to give accurate fuel and supply history, then let the relevant supplier and qualified engineer establish their respective parts of the problem.
Heating works differently from hot water: describe the actual demand
A combi owner may notice E133 during a shower, whereas another first notices it when the morning heating programme starts. Record the circumstances already observed. Do not repeatedly switch between demands to reproduce the failure. Whether the appliance responds differently in ordinary heating and hot-water use is relevant to an investigation, but it is not a reliable remote diagnosis of a diverter valve or control board.
A system with stored hot water needs a slightly different description. Warm water at a tap may remain available from the cylinder after the boiler has stopped. It therefore cannot prove that the boiler is successfully firing now. Tell the engineer whether you have a cylinder and any separate hot-water heat source, and distinguish current boiler operation from water that was heated earlier.
Likewise, a cold shower alone does not prove a current E133 problem if other hot outlets work and the boiler is not locked out. Mention the code if it was genuinely displayed, but explain when it appeared. A historic fault and a present outlet-specific symptom may need separate consideration rather than one assumed cause.
Recent changes to controls, schedules or building management should also be noted. Keep them distinct from appliance repair history. If several people have adjusted settings while trying to restore service, write down the current state and any changes you remember. This helps the engineer assess the installation as found without treating an altered programme or a stored cylinder's remaining heat as evidence that an intermittent combustion-related fault has been resolved.
After several visits, ask for a diagnostic plan instead of another guess
The public Platinum account used in this research reported repeated attendance and electrode work without a lasting resolution. The poster also described the boiler behaving differently during visits. We cannot verify the repair work or infer that any attending engineer acted incorrectly. The account raises a practical question: what should the next visit establish when previous actions have not explained the recurring code?
Gather the existing work records. Separate items inspected, cleaned, adjusted and replaced, and note whether each invoice described a confirmed fault or a suspected cause. If the record is incomplete, ask the previous provider for clarification. Avoid telling the next engineer that “everything has been replaced” unless the documents actually support that statement.
Ask what evidence would distinguish the remaining possibilities and whether an intermittent fault changes the proposed approach. A clear answer may involve inspection, measurement, review of the installation or another defined diagnostic stage. It should not require you to decide which technical test is appropriate. What matters is knowing the purpose of the next chargeable step and how its findings will affect the repair decision.
If a proposed replacement repeats earlier work, ask why that is appropriate and how the new finding differs. If the fault remains unconfirmed after the visit, request a written summary and next step instead of a vague assurance that it should be fine. A plan can acknowledge uncertainty without abandoning the problem. That is more useful than either promising a cure from E133 alone or continuing a sequence of unrelated part changes with no explanation of what each was intended to establish.

Quote scope, repair verification and when replacement is a separate decision
A fault code cannot determine the total repair cost. Ask what initial attendance and diagnostic work cover, whether parts require separate approval and how a further visit would be handled. If the appliance is under a manufacturer or service-plan arrangement, check that route and its terms before assuming independent work will be reimbursed. A routine service is not automatically an E133 investigation.

E133 by itself does not prove that an older boiler should be replaced. If replacement is proposed, ask about the confirmed condition, repair feasibility and available options. Equally, a brief restart after a long unresolved history is not enough to close the investigation. A useful outcome gives you a reasoned explanation, a defined repair or next stage, and a clear route back to support if the symptoms return.
