A sewer smell needs a cause, not a stronger fragrance
A sewer smell inside a house can come from a lost trap seal, a faulty connection, drainage pressure problems or a concealed defect. It does not prove that the main drain is blocked, and a successful drain clearance does not prove that every route for foul air has been closed. Start by distinguishing the smell’s location and timing from assumptions about its source.
First consider whether the odour could be gas. If you suspect a gas leak, leave the affected area and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe place. Record where the smell enters the room

Observe normal use rather than creating repeated heavy discharges to force a symptom. Does the smell follow a toilet flush, the emptying of a basin, an appliance cycle or a long period without use? Does it occur with an extractor running or a window open? These associations can guide an investigation, but they do not prove a particular valve or pipe is faulty.
Draw a simple room sketch showing the relevant fixtures and the area where odour appears. Add known alterations, such as a moved kitchen, a removed appliance or an extension. You do not need to know the hidden drainage layout; mark uncertain routes as unknown. An old plan can help, but it should not be treated as proof that the present pipework follows it.
If the smell is absent during an appointment, your brief record still gives the plumber a starting point. Note when the last episode occurred and how long it lasted. Avoid changing several things at once just before the visit, because cleaning, ventilation and fixture use together can make it hard to tell what affected the symptom.

Understand the water seal before blaming the sewer
A conventional trap retains water between the room and the drainage system. That water barrier is part of the reason normal waste plumbing should not freely release foul air indoors. A trap can therefore matter even when water appears to drain away. Flow and an effective air seal are different aspects of the installation.
In a little-used shower, basin or floor drain, loss of the water seal is one possibility to consider. Where the fixture is safe and draining normally, ordinary use can replenish its trap. Note whether that changes the smell and whether the improvement lasts. Do not keep adding water to an outlet that is already backing up, leaking or connected to an unknown redundant pipe.
A temporary improvement is evidence, not a final diagnosis. If the smell returns soon after another fixture is used, the trap may be losing its seal for a reason other than simple disuse. If it returns without use, a leak, an incomplete trap assembly or a different air route may need checking. The useful question is what causes the barrier to stop working, not merely whether one cup of water makes the room smell better.
Some wastes have removable cleaning components that form part of their operating arrangement. Use the fixture manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning them and replace the intended components correctly. Do not assume a loose insert is optional, or substitute an improvised plug as a permanent repair. If the original assembly is unclear, photograph it for identification.
Gurgling after a flush points to a pressure question
Water moving through drainage pipework also moves air. Manufacturer guidance from McAlpine explains how negative pressure can threaten a trap’s water seal and how its anti-syphon products admit air to counter that effect. This provides a mechanism for investigating linked gurgling and odour; it does not establish that every noisy drain needs the same replacement fitting.
In a January 2025 public DIYUK discussion, a homeowner described sewer odour after flushing despite cleared external drains, and later noted a suction-like noise at another waste. Other contributors reported different causes in their own homes. The original repair outcome was not established. The account supports looking at interactions between fixtures rather than assuming that the toilet itself is always the entry point.
If an ordinary flush coincides with a sound from a basin or shower, record which outlet reacts. Do not repeatedly flush a slow or rising toilet to demonstrate the effect. A plumber can assess the branch arrangement, trap condition and ventilation together. The part that makes the noise may be responding to a pressure problem elsewhere rather than being the only defective component.
Ask what observation supports a proposed remedy. “A valve will probably help” is less informative than an explanation of the suspected pressure behaviour and how it will be checked. Replacing a trap may be appropriate in one layout, while another requires investigation of the wider stack or an obstruction.

Air admittance valves are not universal odour cures
An air admittance valve allows air into appropriate drainage pipework when negative pressure occurs. Polypipe’s technical guidance includes installation and ventilation limitations. It should not be treated as a device that can simply be added anywhere to release all unwanted pressure or cure any drain smell. The whole arrangement matters, including how the drainage system can ventilate.
For a homeowner, the useful distinction is between identifying a possible valve and altering it. If one is visible in a service cupboard, record its location and condition without removing it. Do not cap an open vent, tape over a valve or block ventilation openings to stop an odour. Such changes can affect the system beyond the room in which the smell is noticed.
A boxed-in valve may require suitable access for inspection. Tell the plumber if the boxing was recently installed or the problem began after refurbishment. That is relevant history, not proof that the new work caused the fault. Ask whether the proposed inspection covers only a local fitting or the connected branch and stack arrangement.
In a block of flats, a local change can interact with shared drainage. Contact management before work on communal stacks or inaccessible ducts. A resident’s observation that the smell occurs when a neighbour uses water can help direct investigation, but it does not justify entering another home or modifying a shared system without permission.
Toilet connections and concealed joints need a separate check
A toilet can flush while an adjacent connection or seal still allows odour into the room. Visible water around the base is one possible clue, but its absence does not establish that all hidden connections are sound. Do not pull the toilet away from the wall or loosen its fittings simply to inspect a suspected seal; movement can create a water leak or damage the connection.
The same public DIYUK discussion included a contributor who reported a damaged flexible connection found after a plumber removed a toilet, with the smell resolving after replacement. This is an unverified individual report, not evidence that flexible connectors are generally the cause. It explains why an inspection should consider physical connections as well as blockage and ventilation.
Tell the plumber if the toilet rocks, was recently moved or sits against new boxing. If you have photographs from the installation, they may clarify what is concealed. Do not conceal a suspected leak with additional sealant and then assume the odour problem has been solved. A cosmetic seal around a fixture is not evidence that its waste connection is correct.
Where water is also appearing, describe whether it follows flushing, refilling or cleaning. Those observations can help separate a supply-side leak from a waste-side problem without pretending the source is already known. Kitchen and appliance smells can imitate a drainage fault
A kitchen odour does not always come from the buried sewer. Check ordinary accessible sources such as food waste, the sink’s removable strainer and the appliance cleaning points identified in its user instructions. Keep this inspection limited to areas intended for user access. Do not tip a washing machine, drag a heavy integrated appliance or open electrical covers to look for a smell.
If the odour follows a washing-machine or dishwasher cycle, tell the plumber which stage seems associated with it and whether the sink gurgles or backs up. That can distinguish an appliance-cleaning enquiry from a waste-connection or drainage question. A manufacturer’s maintenance programme and a plumbing repair address different faults; neither should be sold as a universal cure for the other.
Consider recent changes. Was an appliance removed, a waste hose moved or a sink replaced? A connection that is no longer used may still need a proper closure, while an altered waste arrangement needs the correct trap relationship. Ask for the configuration to be checked rather than trying to seal unidentified openings with tape or household filler.
If the smell is strongest near a fridge or another appliance with no foul-drain connection, mention that too. A broader source assessment may save an unnecessary drainage survey. The description “sewer-like” is your sensory observation; it should not prevent consideration of another cause when the drainage evidence does not fit.
A clear CCTV survey does not answer every odour question
A drain camera can provide useful evidence about the pipe sections it actually reaches, but it does not automatically inspect every internal trap, appliance connection or concealed air path. Ask which run was surveyed, from which access point, how far the camera travelled and whether any branches were excluded. “Drains clear” needs a defined scope to be useful in the next investigation.
In a September 2026 public account, a homeowner reported a smell beneath kitchen cupboards in an extension. A partial blockage had been cleared and a sewer inspected, but the smell persisted. An old concealed gully was suggested, without a confirmed resolution. This illustrates an unanswered layout question, not proof that an extension necessarily covers a defective gully.
Before paying for another identical survey, ask what new information it is expected to obtain. It might inspect a previously inaccessible branch, clarify a redundant connection or test a specific suspected defect. If it would only repeat a complete recent inspection of the same run under the same conditions, discuss why that is necessary.
Provide the earlier report and footage where available. A second contractor should be able to distinguish what was observed from a verbal summary passed through several people. Invasive access under a floor should follow a reasoned location and scope, with permission and making good agreed, rather than begin wherever the smell happens to be strongest that morning.

Decide who needs to investigate the next stage
Thames Water lists slow emptying, difficulty flushing and drain odour among possible blockage signs. If several fixtures or neighbouring properties are affected, report that wider pattern rather than describing only one smelly basin. The appropriate route may involve the sewerage company, private drainage work, internal plumbing or building management, depending on the actual affected section.
Do not infer ownership solely from where a cover or pipe sits. Shared arrangements and property alterations can complicate responsibility. Ask the relevant provider or manager to identify the section it has assessed and whether it is referring you to someone else. Keep the incident reference so a private contractor can understand what has already been checked.
For a rental home, report persistent odour and any associated drainage or hygiene problem to the landlord or agent. Explain how often it occurs and whether facilities can be used normally. If it involves communal risers or other flats, ask the manager to coordinate access. Repeated appointments without access to the suspected area are unlikely to settle the problem.
A first plumbing visit can be appropriate for accessible traps and connections; a drainage specialist may be needed for buried runs or a scoped camera investigation. Ask what the proposed visit covers. The useful outcome is either an identified defect or a clear next question supported by observations, not an unsupported assurance that an old house simply smells that way.
Verify the repair against the original pattern
After work, judge the result under the ordinary conditions that previously produced the smell. If it followed a shower or toilet flush, note whether that pattern returns during normal use. If it appeared after a room was unused, a single odour-free hour immediately after cleaning is not a complete test. Agree a sensible observation period with the contractor without deliberately overloading the drainage.
Record what was changed and what was left untested. A replaced trap, repaired connector and cleared obstruction are different interventions. If the smell returns, that record helps decide whether the original defect has recurred, a second route remains or the first explanation needs revisiting. Avoid masking the room with fragrance immediately before assessing the result.
