Is AK Plumbing a suitable Pimlico Plumbers alternative?

AK Plumbing is an option for plumbing work across Greater London, with a North London base, a 24/7 phone service and emergency dispatch. Our charge is £60 for attendance, followed by £160 per hour for agreed plumbing work. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added. Attendance alone does not include diagnosis or repair.

Whether that is the right alternative depends on the job, the available appointment and the complete charging arrangement. AK is not cheaper in every comparison. Pimlico’s published daytime plumbing rate produces a lower labour subtotal in the equal-duration examples below, even after adding VAT.

This page is published by AK Plumbing, not an independent review site or Pimlico. It compares information checked on 21 September 2026 and explains what still needs confirming. We do not claim affiliation with Pimlico, better workmanship without evidence, or that another company’s disappointed customer necessarily would have had a better outcome with us.

Start with your actual requirement: an urgent leak, an uncertain fault, a known replacement or a larger planned project. Those situations need different booking questions. A useful comparison tells you what you are authorising and what it may cost, rather than declaring a winner from one hourly figure.

Published rates: compare the same hours and VAT basis

Pimlico’s rates page, effective 15 January 2026, lists plumbing at £130 per hour from 7am to 6pm, £170 from 6pm to midnight and £210 overnight, excluding VAT. Applying the standard 20% VAT rate gives £156, £204 and £252 respectively.

The AK figures assume that the published £60 attendance plus £160 hourly plumbing rate is confirmed for your requested time. Confirm night, weekend and specialist rates before booking. The table shows attendance and labour subtotals only, assuming one visit, the same number of full chargeable hours and all hours within one time band. It excludes parts, collection time and any additional confirmed charges. These are calculations, not quotations for a particular repair, and they do not predict how long either company will need.

Read the limitations alongside the numbers. An engineer who identifies a problem quickly and obtains the correct part may produce a different total from a visit that requires further investigation. Neither company’s price per hour establishes its speed, competence or final bill for your home.

For a visit crossing a time-band boundary, ask which rate applies and how the change is calculated. We have deliberately not estimated partial-hour AK bills because this comparison does not establish an AK minimum duration or billing increment. Ask for those details with your booking rather than assuming that another company’s rounding rules apply.

What the arithmetic means for your decision

The daytime examples favour Pimlico; the longer evening and overnight examples favour AK only if its stated rate is confirmed for those times. We have not selected only scenarios that favour our own service.

Those results are calculations from published inputs, not evidence that a particular repair will cost less with either company. An accurate estimate of scope matters more than choosing an attractive example.

Do not choose an estimated duration merely to produce the result you prefer. If the fault is uncertain, ask each provider what the initial visit can establish and when further work will need authorisation. A two-hour calculation has little value if one proposal covers investigation and the other assumes the failed component is already known.

The same caution applies to materials. A lower labour subtotal can be outweighed by other differences, and a higher labour subtotal can still form part of a suitable proposal. Make the decision using the agreed scope and expected total, with uncertainty stated, rather than presenting the table as a fixed repair-price menu.

A published-price discrepancy worth checking before booking

Pimlico’s separate Better When We Fix It campaign page advertises £37.50 plus VAT per fifteen-minute increment, subject to a one-hour minimum. Four such increments equal £150 before VAT, which differs from its dated daytime plumbing rate table. We have used the dated table above, not silently combined the two figures.

There is also wording to clarify about additional charges. The rates page says it does not surcharge credit-card payments, while clause 4.1.6 of its service terms describes a transaction charge of 1% plus VAT. The exact application to a proposed booking needs confirmation. The figures above exclude that unresolved item and should not be read as final invoice totals.

This discrepancy is a reason to request the applicable rate and complete charge in writing. It is not evidence that a particular customer was charged incorrectly, and it does not establish why the pages differ. Ask the booking team which published terms govern the work you want.

You can use the same approach with AK: keep the confirmed attendance charge, labour basis and any agreed additional costs with the booking record. If a later proposal differs, resolve the difference before authorising work. Consistency between the conversation and the written information is more useful than selecting the most attractive number from a website.

No call-out fee and a minimum labour charge are different

Pimlico’s plumbing FAQ says there is no call-out fee, with a one-hour minimum followed by fifteen-minute units. A minimum labour charge is therefore still relevant when a task takes less than an hour. No call-out fee should not be interpreted as a promise of a free visit.

AK separates attendance from plumbing work. The attendance charge pays for the engineer to attend; it is not a prepaid hour of labour or an included diagnosis. Ask what work will be charged and how authorisation will be obtained before treating either booking as comparable.

This distinction is particularly useful for a small visible fault. You may believe a tap needs only a simple adjustment, but the booking should still state the charge if the engineer finds that a part is needed or cannot complete the repair during that visit. A short time on site does not explain the contractual price by itself.

It also matters when your purpose is only to obtain a proposal. Say whether you want an estimate for planned work, an investigation of an unknown fault or immediate repair. Ask what you owe if you choose not to proceed. None of those answers should have to be guessed from the phrase call-out.

No call-out fee is also different from no-find-no-fee leak detection. We did not verify an explicit no-find-no-fee undertaking in Pimlico’s rates, service terms and leak-detection page checked on 21 September 2026. That is a limit of this review, not proof that no job-specific offer exists. Ask what remains payable if an investigation does not locate the source, and obtain any exception in writing. AK makes no no-find-no-fee promise through this comparison; its specialist survey scope and charges must be agreed separately.

Parts, collection and return visits can change the comparison

Pimlico’s service terms include chargeable time obtaining non-stocked goods and a goods markup capped at 45% of trade cost before VAT. They say collection should ordinarily take no more than 45 minutes, with notice if longer is expected. That differs from the simpler collection limit on its rates page; confirm the applicable arrangement.

The practical question is what happens if the engineer cannot finish with the available parts. Ask whether time away from the property is chargeable, how the part price will be agreed, and how a return visit will be priced. Make those questions symmetrical: ask AK as well as Pimlico.

For a known fitting, provide a photograph and any accessible model information before attendance. That may help clarify the likely scope, but it does not guarantee that a replacement can be selected from a photograph. Do not buy a component on the assumption that either company will accept responsibility for its suitability.

A proposal should distinguish finding the fault, supplying the part and installing it. If you supply the part yourself, establish who handles a mismatch or product fault. These are ordinary practical differences between proposals, not hidden-cost allegations. Written answers let you compare the actual arrangement rather than assuming all parts policies are identical.

Emergency availability: ask about the actual appointment

Pimlico’s emergency service describes a one-hour response aim, subject to availability, and a 24-hour contact service. That is a meaningful published service proposition, but an aim is not a confirmed arrival time for your address. Ask what the team can offer now and how updates will be communicated.

AK also provides a 24/7 phone service and emergency dispatch across Greater London. We do not turn that into a guaranteed sixty-minute arrival. Your postcode, the fault and available attendance need to be discussed when you call.

For an active escape of water, explain whether it is contained, whether electrical equipment is affected and whether another flat is involved. That information helps either company understand the situation. Do not spend time trying to prove which provider has the lowest theoretical subtotal while an urgent problem remains uncontrolled.

For a contained issue that can safely wait on professional advice, compare the offered appointment and applicable rate rather than assuming that tonight is necessary. Availability, access and the likely scope are all part of the choice. You may reasonably prefer the company with a suitable confirmed slot even when a different provider has a lower published hourly figure.

Where Pimlico may be the better fit

Pimlico offers several trades, including plumbing, electrics, building work and bathroom installation. Its bathroom service describes coordinating the trades required for a refurbishment. That breadth may matter if you need several connected jobs managed together, rather than one plumbing fault addressed.

A customer commenting in a 2025 public Reddit discussion reported satisfaction with a fixed-price Pimlico bathroom refurbishment. We have not verified the contract, scope or result independently. It is an example of someone valuing an agreed project arrangement, not a reliable forecast of how quickly or cheaply your own bathroom could be completed.

If your project includes opening and reinstating walls, electrical changes, tiling and plumbing, ask who is responsible for each stage. A lower plumbing rate alone does not establish the cost of delivering the whole room. Comparing a plumbing-only proposal with a coordinated refurbishment would miss much of the work.

Pimlico may also be the sensible choice if you have a satisfactory existing relationship, work already under its guarantee or a suitable appointment already arranged. There is no need to switch solely because an alternative exists. AK should be considered against the work it can agree to undertake, rather than assumed to match every service in a larger company’s catalogue.

Guarantees: compare the actual repair, not a headline

Pimlico publishes a twelve-month guarantee for most workmanship, with exclusions including drain blockages and pest control. Its guarantee page distinguishes workmanship from manufacturer warranties on supplied products. That published information is a strength worth considering; read the conditions for your particular job.

We do not claim that AK provides an identical guarantee on this page. Ask for the applicable terms with the proposed work. An alternative comparison is useful only when it leaves unknown information as unknown, rather than filling a table with unverified matching promises.

For either provider, ask what happens if the same symptom returns and how to report it. A recurring symptom may concern the original repair, a separate fault or a supplied product. The repair record and the relevant terms help distinguish those situations; the word guaranteed cannot do that alone.

If another contractor has recently worked on the system, contact them about the problem before commissioning unrelated alterations, unless immediate action is needed to make the situation safe. Explain the history to the next engineer. You do not have to abandon an existing route to rectification just because you are also obtaining another opinion.

What public customer experiences add to the comparison

The public reviews we read show reasons to look beyond price. In September 2026 Trustpilot reviews, Kim Murphy praised clear explanation and Derek praised the visit and communication. Miriam described appointment difficulties followed by a satisfactory visit; Pimlico acknowledged the inconvenience in its reply. These are individual accounts, not independently verified performance measurements.

An older July 2022 Reddit account described a disagreement about whether a bathroom visit was a free estimate. Its resolution was not established. We do not treat it as evidence of Pimlico’s current charging practice. It reinforces one useful booking question: what kind of visit are you authorising, and what is payable if no work proceeds?

These experiences shaped the questions on this page, rather than a league table of which company treats customers better. A small selected sample cannot tell you how often a problem occurs. Different trades, job sizes and appointment types also make simple review comparisons unreliable.

When reading reviews yourself, look for the actual work, communication, outcome and any subsequent update. A detailed account of a repair similar to yours may be more informative than a short rating, but it still does not predict your result. We have no verified customer-switching testimony to present as proof that moving from Pimlico to AK improves an outcome.

How to compare an existing quote with an AK proposal

Send or describe the scope you are comparing, including what is included and excluded. A useful second proposal needs the same starting point: repair rather than replacement, exposed rather than concealed access, and the same responsibility for materials and making good. Remove any personal information that is not needed to understand the job.

If a first engineer has identified a fault, distinguish their confirmed findings from a suggested next investigation. Ask the second provider whether it can work from that information or needs its own assessment. A fresh attendance may be reasonable, but it should be explained and priced before you assume it is included.

For hourly work, agree when additional labour needs approval and who can give it. This matters in a rented flat where the person granting access may not be paying. For planned work, ask for the deliverable and any exclusions in writing rather than comparing two figures with different assumptions.

Finally, check any existing appointment before making another booking. Two simultaneous dispatches can create avoidable confusion and potential charges. A decision to use AK should follow a clear change of arrangement, not leave you waiting to see which company arrives first. Confirm cancellation terms directly with the provider whose appointment you no longer need.

Choosing and booking the option that fits your job

AK is worth considering when you need plumbing work in Greater London and want to discuss a clearly separated attendance charge and hourly labour basis. Tell us the symptom, postcode, urgency and any previous investigation so the proposed attendance relates to the problem you have.

Ask for the charge if the visit establishes that further work or a specialist is needed, as well as the expected next step if repair is possible. Do not assume that attendance is free when a fault is not found, or that accepting attendance commits you to every possible repair. Clarify the authorisation point before the visit.

Pimlico remains a valid choice when its published rate, available appointment, multi-trade scope or existing relationship suits you better. The evidence here does not justify labelling one provider the cheapest for every job or the best for every household.

Use the pricing page for AK’s current charge structure and the service page that matches your issue. If you are comparing another provider too, our alternatives hub and Aspect comparison use the same approach: dated sources, comparable assumptions and explicit limits. The aim is a booking you understand, with the work and costs agreed, rather than a decision driven by an incomplete headline price.
